Exercise and Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Much like other illnesses and diseases, people who have had breast cancer often see benefits to participating in exercise as a part of their treatment and recovery. It is often recommended to start with light aerobic and strengthening exercises and building on intensity and duration of the exercise as tolerated. Exercise can help improve energy levels and mood for those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Stretching is also a big part of exercise as therapy, making sure your limbs and body stay limber especially if feeling sick after treatment and general feeling unwell can lead to more sedentary time. Keep in mind that exercise can be done in short bouts and still be beneficial. 10 mins of moderate to vigorous intensity (fast walk, biking etc.) of exercise everyday is a good place to start if you are unsure of where to begin exercising(This goes for everyone healthy or not). Regular house chores are also a great form of physical activity like vacuuming and/or washing dishes. The little bits of advice that we are posting here is only the tip of the iceberg on how exercise can help people who are being treated for breast cancer.
